Corpus Chromatic Winter Exhibition

Corpus Chromatic is a body of portraits meant to celebrate and venerate living systems for their physical beauty, unique functions, characteristics, ancient designs, and meaning. Some branch-like forms and patterns visible in the human body mirror symbols of nature such as leaf venation and tree limbs; unfamiliar subjects are shrouded in mystique yet have universal origins and designs.

Anatomical subjects are abstracted with bright colors to bring attention to them and to add fantasy, drawing attention to the beauty and function of the living object itself.

Nowhere, Now Here

I created one piece of art everyday for over a year. The hope was to loosen up any kind of block I had about creating a piece and how important it had to be, a complete and ready I had to be with an idea. By making art everyday without judgment, I was encouraged to explore half-formed ideas and just put pen or brush to the page. This show displayed over 300 9”x9” pieces placed on table surfaces and mounted on walls and boards. Others were framed and displayed in wall arrangements or remained in the spiral bound multi-media sketchbooks in which they were created. People were encouraged to flip through and handle the pages, turning them over to find the title and date of each on the back.

Reception: VECTORS - Duke Student Union Building, Brodhead Gallery

Vectors is an exploration of the correlation of color, line, and texture and how their relationships convey direct actions, harmony and discord. It is about Doing, not Thinking about Doing. Action painting is a term that applies to this body of work, and mirror is added to each composition to portray ever-shifting thoughts of the self and the self seen in context with one’s surroundings.

Vectors are trajectories; they are the course, the route on which information travels. This series has become much more intuitive than I had planned, as art can be less interesting if i know how it will end up. Compositions often become entirely different from how they first looked. Knowing that every action leads to some sort of new view or perspective, I alter formerly complete works, building inertia on an ever-changing picture plane.
